ARTIST STATEMENT
Leading a life that is focused on following Jesus Christ informs entirely how and what I create. I have a deep passion for prayer and contemplation. This is essentially my thesis exploration - art as spiritual practice and the connection between art and prayer. Everything that I create is a reflection of my heart, mind, and soul. I humbly and firmly believe that the Lord has placed a specific calling on my life, a calling to be His missionary of beauty. Like the great Italian painter and Dominican friar, Fra Angelico, I too believe that my art can bring people to our Lord Jesus.
Each time I enter into this my artistic process, I intentionally invite the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of creativity and love, to come and dwell with me. As I create, I tend to move quickly, attempting to get at “the whole”, letting the image naturally unfold without too much control or pressure. I find that, at a certain point, there exists within me a deep sense of awe. My own strokes and movements begin to surprise and inspire me. These strokes tend to take on a rather bold, expressive, and gestural form. I am drawn to vibrant colors and striking light/shadow contrast. There is a sense of urgency and energy within and around my work.
I want my pieces to move the viewer, I want them to engage and speak. I want the work to be somewhat recognizable but also semi-abstract, leaving room for viewer interpretation, resonation, and connection. My hope is that this body of images would leave the viewer with a deep peace and a sense of longing for that Love which is only found through prayer and relationship with the Lord.
